Therapeutic Phlebotomy FAQ:
What is therapeutic phlebotomy?
Therapeutic phlebotomy, also known as bloodletting, is a medical procedure that involves removing a specific amount of blood from a patient to treat certain medical conditions.
Who is it for?
Therapeutic phlebotomy is used to treat conditions where there is an excess of red blood cells or iron in the body, such as:
Hemochromatosis: A genetic disorder that causes the body to absorb too much iron.
Polycythemia vera: A bone marrow disorder that leads to an overproduction of red blood cells.
Iron overload due to blood transfusions: Patients who receive frequent blood transfusions can develop high levels of iron in their bodies.
How is the procedure performed?
Therapeutic phlebotomy is performed in a healthcare setting by a trained phlebotomist. The procedure involves:
- The patient sits or lies down.
- A phlebotomist locates and inserts a needle into a vein.
- A specific amount of blood is drawn into a bag.
- The needle is removed, and the puncture site is bandaged.
How often is the procedure done?
The frequency of therapeutic phlebotomy depends on the underlying condition and the patient’s response to treatment. It may be performed weekly, monthly, or less frequently.
What are the benefits?
Therapeutic phlebotomy can improve symptoms and reduce the risk of complications associated with conditions such as hemochromatosis and polycythemia vera. It can also reduce iron overload, which can damage organs such as the liver and heart.
